| Cord Blood And Stem Cell Research |
|
While there have been many advancements in dental technology, there has been more talk over the millions of dollars that the United States has allotted to stem cell therapy, umbilical cord blood and bone marrow treatments. The US government passed a law in 2005, the "Stem Cell Therapeutic and Research Act of 2005", which would increase usage and research into cord blood stem cells. Stem cells, which are valuable because of their ability to renew and reproduce themselves, are obtained mainly through umbilical cord blood. Cord blood is removed from the placenta or umbilical cord after a child is born, and it, along with the stem cells can be stored and kept until it can be used in a transplant or donor situation. A national registry and databases should make it possible for up to 90% of the population in need to be able to access donor cells. These cells are already proving to be extremely effective in fighting many blood and immune-system related diseases and conditions, and with more research and development, hopefully more cures and treatments can be developed using stem cells and cord blood in order to help more people afflicted with terrible conditions. |
